OK…did I get your attention??? Thought I would share with you my Adventures in Kindergarden last week which provided me with much-needed amusement. I did a presentation at Morris School in Lenox for my son’s class, as well as the two other kindergarden classes, which was about 60 kids plus 9 adults. Being from a small town, I knew the teachers and most of the children, who were entirely too excited to see me
I talked with them about food allergies and discussed the different allergies people can have. The ever-enthusiastic 5 and 6 year olds all wanted to share their allergies with me and their friends. “I’m allergic to milk”, “I’m allergic to peanuts” were the cries from the audience. Some even shared that they were allergic to dust, mold, cats, dogs, etc. One little girl told me that she couldn’t eat strawberries. Then, one little boy raised his hand anxiously and I called on him. “I can’t eat bees ’cause I’m allergic to them!”
After myself and the other adults stopped laughing, I composed myself and read them a story, “Alexander and Friends visit the Main Street School”. Then followed up with the rousing video of “Alexander, the Elephant Who Couldn’t Eat Peanuts” (Both available throught the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network, www.foodallergy.org).
It was a wonderful experience to be with the children and help bring more awareness to food allergies. The kids are so accepting of their classmates and I can only hope that it continues through the rest of their school experience.
Nestlé USA’s Baking Division is recalling “Carnation® Famous Fudge Kits” due to incomplete allergen labeling.
The kits were distributed during the 2009 holiday season without a complete allergen precautionary statement through retail and club stores nationwide.
The kits can be identified by day codes beginning with 9225 through 9259, “Best By” date of June/July 2010, and UPC 50000-62251 for the retail version, and 50000-62248 for the club store version.
